10 Gorgeous Messy Updos

Sunday, September 21, 2014

Now that summer is here, it’s time to start thinking about all the party invitations that are inevitably going to be coming your way. From weddings and nights out, to Thanksgiving and the flurry of holiday fetes, it’s definitely a fun time of year.

And when it comes to parties, sure the clothes we wear are key, but we are women after all, which means most of our party-night effort goes toward one thing: Our hair.

While having options when it comes to changing up our hairstyles is usually a plus, on big nights it can also be extremely confusing: Are you going to wear it straight, curly wavy, half-up, braided, bunned—you get the picture. That’s why we love the idea of a simple but oh-so-chic updo.

To get you started, we compiled 10 gorgeous messy updos from Pinterest.

      Fishtail Braid Updo hair Tutorial
      How to Style :
      • Step 1 : Gathering your hair to the side and secure it with a thin rubber hair tie. Divide it into two sections.
      • Step 2 : Hold both sections in one hand, separated by your pointer finger, and use your other hand to grab a small piece from the outside of one section.
      • Step 3 & 4 : Repeat step 2 until you’ve just about reached the end and secure it with an elastic. It’s even better if it’s messy, so pull out some strands and roughen up the braid a bit.
      • Step 5 : If you want to turn your fishtail into an updo, start by rolling the braid inward and up towards the nape of your neck.
      • Step 6 : Secure the rolled bun with bobby pins. The looser and messier the bun, the better!

Perfect simple updo that anyone can do!

      updo

      Monday, April 19, 2010

Over the weekend, it was senior ball & a darling girl in my ward asked if I would help her with her hair. Her hair is short - above the shoulders & she said she usually wears it down. So we immediately thought let's change it up & see if we can pull it all up. I can't take all the credit for this. My very creative sister happened to be over & was more than happy to help. & guess what? She wore it to church the next day & it still looked perfect!!

Sorry I didn't post step by step directions but it's pretty easy. You could actually do this on long or fine hair too. (my pictures are backwards & I'm of course too lazy to switch:)

We waved the hair all over with a 3 barrel iron. Then twisted the bangs & pinned them back. Next, starting at the oppiste side her bangs were at, we started twisting the hair, strands at a time & securing each strand with a bobby pin (these bobby pins are visible - if you have thicker or longer hair - you could hide them better) Continue twisting strands until all the hair is up. This kept all those baby hairs underneath secured nicely all night long.

We kind of poofed the top so you could see the wave & it looked more full. We finished with a loose bun from the ends left over & added a cute flower. How easy to do on yourself even? & we didn't use any elastics - only some good ol' hairspray & bobby pins.

Of course - pictures never do it justice.

& BTW - thanks for all the birthday wishes to my girlie!! You guys are all so sweet!

      UpsideDown FrenchBraid

      Saturday, November 14, 2009

I totally remember going to my sister & asking her to do an upside down french braid on my hair for school & I would flip my hair over the bed & she would frenchbraid away. Then with the end of the tail - she would tuck it back into the braid. Well - I decided to do something pretty close to it. Don't mind the unmade bed (sheets are being washed:) This would be really cute for church...umm might have to do it again for tomorrow!
I had her flip her head over my awesome unmade bed.
French braid away - going as far as you want. I went a little more than half way on her head.
Flip her head over & pull all of the hair into a ponytail. My girlie's is a high pony tail because I wanted to make sure her curls were on top of her head.
Curl the pony & pin it so the curls are on the top of the head. By doing this - the french braid is much more visible - which is what we want to see, right?
