Start In the Shower:
“I tell my clients all the time that volume starts in the shower,” Townsend says. Reach for a volume-building product that will give you body without weighing down your hair. Townsend recommends Dove Daily Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner. We’re also fans of Kérastase Bain Volumactive and Lait Volumactive.

Apply When Damp:
“Apply products to damp hair because they require heat to bring the volume out,” Townsend expains. When shopping for the right product, you might see a familiar face making big waves in volumizing game. “Mousse is making the comeback of the century! Forget about those crunchy mousses from the 80s, now we are seeing moisturizers added to mousses and foams,” says Townsend.

Style Like a Pro:
“The texture and thickness of the hair should determine which products you choose but the styling techniques remain the same. After applying mousse or root volumizing spray, blow dry with a round brush—they give the hair more volume than flat brushes,” Townsend suggests.

Next, “set the hair at the crown in barrel curls (wrap the blow-dried sections in that area around 2 or 3 fingers and secure at the scalp with a clip) and let the hair cool for a few minutes, then take the clips out and tease at the root for extra volume.”

If you want even more of a boost, Townsend suggests throwing in a few hot rollers at the crown. “Spray a flexible hold hairspray on the hair before wrapping the hair in the roller and make sure to let them cool down before removing the rollers.”
